Carpets from the Beni Mrirt region, as well as the most known Beni Qurain, are considered to be the diamond of the Moroccan carpets collections well-deserved due to their superior quality. At first glance, Beni Mrirt and Beni Ourain look similar, but there is still a significant difference between them. Beni Mrirt's carpets knot-tying technique varies by its fine weaving which is done more tightly. Ornaments and color palette are different too: weavers use light not tinted wool as a base, but express their creativity in patterns.
Except for widely used geometrical prints, carpets can be decorated with abstract
compositions and the traditional Berber symbols of different colors: from black and
brown to indigo and ochre. So, Beni Mrirt is quite big, extremely soft, and dense carpet enriched with unusual abstract forms of natural colors.
Beni Mrirt is a small region in the Middle Atlas in Morocco where initially Berber carpets were used as rugs and blankets. Thick and soft fibers are protected from cold in the mountains. Over time carpet making became a traditional activity and weaving skills were given from mother to daughter. Special knowledge of knot-tying techniques forming a carpet required long practice and a knack for it. In the middle of 20 the century, tribal Moroccan carpets were highly appreciated by international designers and became an integral part of traditional style. Nowadays they look classic and contemporary at the same time.
The carpet is made of 100% soft and tender sheep wool, which is carefully gathered and taken care of. These sheep graze freely in the ecological mountains areas. The process of waving usually takes at least one month. In the end, carpets are washed numerous times and dried out under the generous African sun in order to obtain their ultimate softness. It is needless to say that each carpet is absolutely unique!
